Eichler Homes and California Modern Design

A glance into the history of the house, this article was published by Family Circle magazine in the late 1950's.

If you're interested in learning more about homes like this, and if you just happen to live in the Palm Springs area, you should definitely check out some events during Modernism Week. Events take place over 10 days in February and include tours, films, lectures and parties. I just might have to make it out there for something....

El Cosmico

I think I've found my next getaway spot. A creative retreat, with open skies and unorthodox lodging. Located in Marfa, Texas. Come February, this is exactly what I'll be jonesing for.
"Visitors are encouraged to explore and use the communal spaces on the land including an elm grove full of hammocks, a community lounge and mercantile, and an outdoor kitchen and dining space. El Cosmico offers wood fired Dutch hot tubs seasonally and, eventually a large pool and pavilion will lie at the Bedouin heart of the village to offer an oasis for guests and Marfans alike.
More than just a place to spend the night, El Cosmico offers opportunities for creativity and play. From workshops and retreats ranges from sewing to cooking to art classes to writing workshops and more."

Raw Light

The home of Charlotte Rust in Auckland, New Zealand, via The Selby. I'm smitten with the idea of entertaining in her very raw outdoor space. The combination of textures and materials throughout her home is so enticing.

Upcycled

Piet Hein Eek’s Studio: The Dutch designer’s new empire in Eindhoven opened late last year in an old ceramics factory. The 10,000 sq m space was ‘rescued’ and re-crafted into a multi-purpose studio, using original materials from the surrounding, demolished buildings. Salvaged utility pipes have become a feature along the bar, while signage for the opening was created using cleaning brushes. (via Stylus)

Creating Spaces

I love the idea of creating and manipulating a space. To use ordinary materials to create an experience within a space has always intrigued me. You can't underestimate the power of 'multiples'. In this case, the duo behind Confetti System has used exceptional amounts tissue-paper fringe to transform the retail space of JCrew.
